I’m sure many of you have been watching the news recently and you’ve most likely seen this quote, “It’s not what you do that truly matters, it’s more what you don’t do.” I agree! That’s a great point that we often forget to think about. There are times when our actions and thoughts are so out of control, we just don’t know what to do about it.
We all know that we can’t control everything in our lives, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t try and control the things that we can. So just because a person can’t control a certain situation, doesn’t mean that they don’t have a plan. And one of the biggest things that we need to get on top of is our own inaction. This is one of the reasons why I believe the term “self-awareness” is so important.
Just because you can’t take control of something doesnt mean that you don’t have a plan for it. And just because you cant do something doesnt mean that you don’t have a plan to do it as well.
Self-awareness is the ability to acknowledge that we have limited control over our own actions, and to plan for the things that we can. In this very same way, I believe that self-awareness is the ability to recognize that even though we cant control something, we have control over how we react to it. For example, I used to think that I could easily control my reactions to certain people. But now I know that I can’t.
This is how self-awareness comes into play. When I feel that I cannot control my response, I realize that I have to change my response. For example, I have to stop reacting to certain people and start responding differently to other people.
The next step that’s important for self-awareness is to decide when to give up control and just let the situation unfold. This is similar to what it means to be able to identify a friend’s weakness and change your behavior accordingly. This is the second step of self-awareness.
For me, this is often hard to do. I have to say that my self-awareness also means that I cannot easily give up control. But it can be done. For example, sometimes I just need to shut the hell up.
This is one of the more difficult aspects of self-awareness to do. Usually you have to wait until you’re alone, or in a room, or in a certain building. Otherwise, you are going to forget to recognize your own power. A lot of people try to talk to themselves like this by saying, “Well, that was a stupid move, I should have been more careful.” But that’s not what self-awareness is about.
The fact is that we are all, to varying degrees, self-aware. But the power of self-awareness is that you are aware of your own thoughts and feelings. It isn’t just thinking or feeling that you are aware of. We are all aware of what we are thinking and feeling.
We all know that we are capable of doing things, but we often get so caught up in the idea of doing something that we forget to notice the power we have from doing it. As a result a lot of us get stuck doing the same old thing, because we forget that we have the power to do something different. Then we get stuck doing the same old thing, because we forget that we have the power to do something different.
