I always know when a new book has been released because I first see the title in the author’s bio. When I started reading “The Three Levels of Self-Awareness”, I was immediately drawn to this title. In a way, the book is a manifesto for anyone seeking to find their own path.
James Gumbert is a professor of philosophy at the University of Texas, Austin, who’s written a lot about how our brains work. If you haven’t read his book, you really should. It’s a fascinating and thought-provoking read. Check out the other authors on the list and see what you think.
It’s a bit of a self-help book, but the message is that the most important thing in life is to seek to control what is happening around you. You have to learn to be aware of yourself, to pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. But I think that’s a message that’s applicable to anything and everyone in your life.
Most of us have an innate tendency to try to control things in our lives. We have to consciously work at it, and as a result there is a great deal of unhappiness that comes with the effort. The message of his book is that we should be aware of our emotions, feelings, and thoughts and act in ways that make us happy. To the extent that we can control how we feel, we can control what happens in our lives.
A lot of the stuff in his book is based on his own experiences, but it is also very applicable to life. James Gumbert is a psychologist by training and the former Dean of the International School of Advanced Psychology, now called the International Psychoanalytic Institute. He has published several books and has written over 100 scholarly papers. His book “Feelings” is the most well-researched book I’ve ever read about emotions.
Gumbert’s book feels like a step back in time, and one that might have more of its roots in psychology than Freud. For example, he explains how we are motivated by internal factors, while external factors are more likely to influence what we want or not want. He also explains the impact of fear and anxiety on our behavior and emotions. I think it is a great read.
My book Feelings is a great read, but it’s not a book that I would recommend to anyone who is a professional psychologist. If you want to have a go at writing your own research papers, go for it. If you are looking for a fun book to read with a friend, look elsewhere.
